Daily Commentary
Thursday September 16th
Corn: -4
The corn market had quiet session that saw early strength wane. December futures ended the day with a 4-cent loss and ended 8 cents below the early high. There were no confirmations today of the rumored Chinese corn purchases, leaving the market looking for a bullish headline. Weekly export sales were also very poor at nearly 10 million bushels. Farmer selling had picked up the last couple of session but was mostly absent today. Basis levels remain defensive with early harvest premiums becoming more scattered.
Soybeans: +1 ½
The soybean market traded higher early before ending near steady on the day. The November contract added just over a penny today in a 17-cent range. Soybean meal was the driver today as it posted a solid gain. Export sales were solid with over 46 million bushels booked. China was a buyer of more than the market had anticipated. The USDA did announce a flash sale of beans to China today after yesterday’s surprising cancellations. Repairs continue in the gulf with talk that good progress is being made.
