Corn: -1 ½
The corn market traded both sides of unchanged through the session today before ending with a small loss. December futures ended the day just over a penny lower in a very quiet session. For the week the December contract lost nearly 30 cents and traded to its lower level since July. Fund selling continues to chip away at values as bullish news has been scarce. Private yield estimates have been getting larger over the last week after pro farmer found a better number than the USDA’s Aug estimate. The corn export market has also been quiet with China absent for many weeks along with concerns due to damage from hurricane IDA. Ethanol production has also lagged recently as margins have been under pressure.
Soybeans: +8 3/4
Soybeans also traded both sides today but were able to finish with a moderate gain. The November contract finished just nearly 9 cents higher after trading in a 20-cent range for the day. Soybeans were also off nearly 30 cents on the week testing the low from late June. Soybeans also had bearish influences throughout the week. Export terminal damage is still being assessed in the gulf along with the slow sales pace to start the year. Soybean yields have remained somewhat steady but the combines will soon tell the real numbers.
