Friday August 28th
Corn: +5 ¼ to +3
The corn market spent much of the day trading slightly lower before firming late and finishing with a small gain. Nearby values gained over a nickel on the day and finished very near the high of the session. New crop values gained 3 cents while finishing nearly a dime above the low. Weekly gains were over 16 cents new crop values with the cash market gaining nearly 20 cents. Basis levels have been pressured this week as harvest is approaching but early Southern harvest is being slowed by excessive rains. The USDA did announce a new sale to Colombia in the morning update but the recent new crop sales activity has been slowed.
Soybeans: -3
Soybeans traded lower throughout the session but did mange to finished with just a small loss. The November contract lost 3 cents on the day after trading nearly 20 cents lower at one point. Soybean products were mixed on the day with deferred soybean oil contracts ending with modest gains. For the week, beans gained over 32 cents but that was after losing over 70 the previous week. Soybean export activity has been solid with almost daily announcements of new crop sales, but those are needed to reach the current forecast. Reports that China has been booking Brazilian soybeans Jan forward is concerning for the new crop export outlook. Rainfall across much of the Western Belt this week may have to helped to stabilize the ratings that will be updated Monday afternoon.
