Monday August 23rd
Corn: -3/4 to -1 ½
The corn market traded both sides of unchanged through the session before ending with a small loss. Nearby values were just fractionally lower while new crop was off just over a penny on the day. Both contracts did trade in a range of well over a dime throughout the day. The USDA did announce a new crop corn sale to Mexico in their morning release, but that was no more than routine at this point. Weekly export inspections were mostly as expected, but again small than needed at 28 million bushels. Last week’s ProFarmer tour showed a US yield of 177 bpa which was over 2 bpa above the USDA estimate. This will likely keep the market tempered for the time being.
Soybeans: +2
Soybeans spent much of the session higher but finished well off the early high. The November contract finished just 2 cents higher after trading 15 cents higher at one point. Soybean products were mixed on the day with soy oil posting a sharp gain. Weekend rains were deemed beneficial to the soybean crop, but last week’s low held for now. Weekly soy exports were reported at 6 million bushels. This was mostly as expected but it does appear the export forecast could fall again. There were no USDA sales announcements for soybeans today but it was rumored that China was showing interest.
