Monday August 16th
Corn: -3 ½ to -4 ¼
The corn market had a quiet session that saw it trade modestly lower for much of the session. Nearby corn was off just over 3 cents on the day after trading in range of near a dime. New crop values lost over 4 cents as spreads were firmer today. Weekly export inspections released in the morning report were seen at 29.7 million bushels. This was within expectations but again below what is needed to ship to meet estimates. The USDA cut exports last week, but it looks like maybe more cuts were needed. Last week’s release of FSA data has some traders believing that more corn acres will be seen in coming reports. Late afternoon conditions report showed corn ratings down 2% with traders expecting steady ratings.
Soybeans: +3 ¼
Soybeans ended the day with a small after trading slightly higher much of the day. November futures added just over 3 cents today, trading near the highest levels seen since late July. Soy products were mixed on the day with soybean meal ending with a modest gain. The USDA again announced a new crop soybean sale in the morning update. This was the 8th consecutive day of announcements. Soybean export inspections were on the high end of thoughts at over 10 million bushels in the morning report. NOPA was also out with their July crush numbers today at 155 mln bushels. This was well below estimates down from 172 million last year.
