Tuesday August 10th
Corn: -1 to -1/2
The corn market traded lower for most of today’s session before finishing with a small loss. Both the old and new crop contracts lost near a penny on the day after opening weaker last night. Yesterday’s surprising uptick in the corn ratings helped to pressure the overnight trade. That increase was led by the sharp 11-point jump in the Illinois number. The USDA did announce some routine corn sales to Mexico in this morning’s release which did provide some support. CONAB released their revised estimate of the Brazilian corn crop today, down nearly 7 mmt. Many traders will expect the smaller Brazilian crop to push the USDA to increase their new crop corn export estimate on Thursday.
Soybeans: +7
Soybeans ended the day with a moderate gain after trading mixed to mostly higher through the day. November futures added 7 cents on the day after trading in a range of nearly 20 cents. Soybean products were also higher today with soybean oil again leading the way. Yesterday’s rating showed the disparity in the crop with the Western states again losing ground while improvement was seen in the East. Rumors continue to circulate about more Chinese interest in new crop soybeans. These sales will need to be seen or the USDA will need to begin to look at lowering new crop soy export demand.
