Monday August 9th
Corn: -4 ¾ to -2 ¾
The corn market spent much of the session trading lower before ending with a small loss. September futures ended the day nearly a nickel lower after trading in a range of less than a dime. New crop values were off nearly 3 cents as corn spreads continued weaker. Better than expected rains across much of the Western corn belt along with a poor export inspections report kept corn under pressure much of the day. Corn weekly export loadings totaled just 26.3 million bushels. This was below expectations and well below the level needed to meet the USDA’s export goal. China still has nearly 100 million bushels of unshipped old crop purchases. The late afternoon conditions update showed the corn G/E rating up a surprising 2 points. Look for this to put initial pressure on tonight’s trade.
Soybeans: -7
Soybeans trades both sides of unchanged today before finishing with a modest loss. The November contract ended the day 7 cents lower and nearly 18 cents below the overnight high. Soybean products were mixed today with soybean oil closing under sharp pressure. The USDA did announce a flash new crop sale of soybeans to “unknown” in their morning release. Weekly loadings were on the lower end of expectations at just 4.2 million bushels. Today’s conditions update showed the soybean ratings remaining steady.
