Thursday July 1st

Corn: +2 ½ to +1/2

The corn market finished just slightly higher after fading from the early morning high.  September corn futures finished just over 2 cents higher after trading over 25 cents higher at one point.  The December contract was just fractionally higher today while also finishing well off the early high.  Early strength was tied to follow through from yesterday’s strong move, but that support waned through the session.  This morning’s weekly sales report was disappointing with old crop bookings of less than 1 million.  This followed the recent trend of falling sales and failed to meet the average needed to meet the USDA’s forecast.

Soybeans: -1/2 to -3 ½

Soybeans finished the day with modest losses after also falling from early highs.  Nearby soybeans were just fractionally lower today after trading in a 50-cent trading range.  New crop values were off just over 3 cents, ending over 25 cents below the early high.  Soybean products were mixed on the day with meal ending with a moderate gain.  Weekly soybean sales were within expectation with old crop bookings reported at 3.4 million bushels.  New crop sales were very solid after the multiple reported sales that were made to China and unknown.  May census soy crush numbers released this afternoon were right as expected at 173.5 million bushels.
