Thursday February 17th
Corn: +3 to +2 ¾
The corn market traded both sides of unchanged today before ending with a modest gain. March futures finished the day 3 cents higher after trading in a dime’s range. The December contract was also near 3 cents higher and ended near the session’s high. The same stories continue to get the headlines with the on again/off again Russian and Ukraine conflict along with South American weather concerns. Weekly export sales were as expected at 32.3 million bushels. Year to date commitments continue to run behind the pace needed with China absent from the US corn market.
Soybeans: +4 ½ +5 ¼
Soybeans also traded both sides of steady before closing with small gains. Nearby values gained just over 4 cents on the day after trading in a nearly 30 cent range. New crop futures gained just over a nickel while finishing nearly a dime off the high of the session. Soy products were mixed today with both oil and meal nearly unchanged. Weekly export sales were solid at 50 million bushels. This was down from last week but well above the normal sales for this point in the year. Concern over the availability of South American soybeans remains as their crop prospects have a very wide range of estimates.
