Corn: -17 ¾ to -8 ½
The corn market traded lower throughout the day before ending with sharp losses. Nearby values finished nearly 18 cents lower after trading over 20 cents lower at one point. The old/new spreads were weaker today as the December contract ended just over 8 cents lower. Much of today’s pressure was from reports that tensions between Russia and the Ukraine had eased. This also weighed on today’s wheat market along with the crude oil trade. Tomorrow will bring the weekly energy report with the trade hoping to see some stabilizing in the ethanol markets.
Soybeans: -18 ¾ to -10 ½
Soybeans also traded under pressure today with values ending with double-digit losses. March soybeans lost nearly 19 cents on the day, posting their lowest close in over a month. As with corn, new crop soybeans did fare better, losing just over a dime. Soybean products were also lower with meal off nearly $10. Spillover pressure from the grains along with a disappointing NOPA crush report weighed on today’s trade. NOPA showed 182.2 million bushels crushed in Jan, well below market’s estimate. The trade was expecting closer to 186 million with the current crush pace leaving the USDA’s increased crush estimate in question.
