Corn: +5 ¼ to +3
The corn market traded both sides of unchanged through the session today before ending with a moderate gain. March futures were the strongest on the board today, gaining over a nickel on the day. New crop values were 3 cents higher as spreads were firmer on the day. For the week, nearby corn gained 20 cents and tested the recent high made in late December. Strong weekly export sales of nearly 43 million bushels may have helped to fuel today’s recovery but sales still trailed the number from a year ago. Rumors of Chinese corn interest have been supportive this week along with general overall commodity strength. Crude oil did close lower again today but remains with a few dollars of the recent high.
Soybeans: -11 ½ to -4
Soybeans traded lower for much of the session today and finished with moderate losses. Nearby soybeans ended the day over 11 cents lower after trading 20 cents lower at one point. Soybean spreads turned weaker today with new crop values ending 4 cents lower. Despite today’s lower close, the nearby soybean market gained 44 cents for the week. Soy products were mixed on the day with soybean meal posted a sharp loss while soybean oil was slightly higher. Rumors of Chinese soy interest and continued concern over South American dryness were the stories this week. Weekly bean sales of 24.7 million bushels were solid but daily announcements throughout the week were disappointing.
