Corn: +2 ¼
The corn market finished with a small gain today after trading both sides of unchanged through the session. The March contract finished just over 2 cents higher after trading in a dimes range. Mid-day strength was centered around rumors of the EPA announcing ethanol mandates. The mandates were eventually released after the close with nothing surprising being seen. There are rumors that the EPA will deny a significant number of small refiner exemptions, which would be somewhat supportive. Outside markets were supportive today with crude oil gaining over $2 along with higher equity markets.
Soybeans: -11 ¼
Soybeans traded lower for much of the session today before finishing with moderate loss. January futures ended over 11 cents lower with deferred values performing better as spreads were again weaker. Soy products were also lower with soybean oil down moderately while meal was off just slightly. The USDA did announce another small flash sale of soybeans this morning but that was the only supportive export news of the day. China released the November import numbers today, down nearly 40 million bushels from a year ago. This along with a poor October import numbers has the China import pace at one of the slowest versus estimates in several years.
