Corn: -3/4
The corn market traded both sides of unchanged today before finishing with a modest loss. The December contract ended just fractionally lower after trading in a range of nearly 14 cents. Early strength saw spreads weaken but when the markets turned lower, spreads turned firmer. The Dec/Mar spread traded out to 8 cents before finishing at less than 6. Nearby values traded to their highest levels since early August today with the December ’22 contract making a new high. Today’s news was limited with the weekly energy report showing mostly supportive numbers. Ethanol production did tick higher on the week along with a slight build in inventories.
Soybeans: -6 ½
Soybeans also traded mixed through today’s session but did spend much of the day trading lower. January futures lost over 6 cents on the day, selling off as corn and wheat fell from their highs. November ’22 futures lost nearly 4 cents and continue to trade within the recent range. Next years acreage will be hotly debated in the coming months with new crop corn making a new contract high today while new crop soybeans trade nearly 60 cents below their summer high. A higher US dollar along with good weather across much of the South American growing regions weighed on today’s trade. Friday will bring a shortened 8:30-12:00 trading session.
