Swine Showmanship

Jul 01, 2020

It is always fun and exciting showing your swine each year! The fair is just a small part of what it takes to raise a good quality animal. There is a lot of time spent working with your swine before the fair starts.

Here are some useful tips to make sure you are ready. Make sure that your swine are healthy, and always have a clean pen. You will want to walk your swine daily and have your parents act as a judge to give you pointers on what they like and do not like about your swine’s performance. Train your swine to walk with their head up and lastly, always use mild soap. Following these tips will make for a great experience in the ring come the day of the show.

For the day of the show, make sure you locate the judge before entering the pen. Head the swine off before you get caught in a corner, stay out of groups, and show intensity by being focused. Always keep your swine ten to fifteen feet away from the judge. Make sure you do not pass between your swine and the judge. Always keep one eye on the judge and one eye on the swine. Show the swine from its hip so it does not look like you are following the swine. Always anticipate the judge’s move so it is easier for the judge to see you.  Make sure you give the judge different views of your swine and lastly, do not overuse your whip or cane.

We hope these tips will help you in the show ring and an important thing to remember is to relax and most of all have FUN!

From everyone at The Mid-Iowa Cooperative, GOOD LUCK!
